Roma series, 2013
Courtesy of the artist and Jack Hanley Gallery, New York

To create the Roma series, the artist sculpted clay life studies of the standard supermarket variety Roma tomato posed upright on their stem end. The larger scale highlights stem-end clefts and a blossom-pucker point that were modified from the Italian plum tomato when the Agricultural Research Service created the Roma for the American public in 1950s.
